JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Occupational Therapist
DEPARTMENT: Center-Based Program
REPORTS TO: Program Coordinator
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
- Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy
- Nebraska Licensure
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: Experience in delivering services in a pediatric or school setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
- Knowledge of consultation protocol and process for calling on school districts, educational service units and parents; basic technology for documentation and communication; teaching and regulations for special education specifically those with visual impairments; and methods and techniques for assessing children with visual impairments including multiple disabilities.
- Knowledge of current OT educational practices associated with students who are blind or visually impaired including the knowledge of sensory integration strategies and strategies in teaching functional fine motor skills and activities of daily living.
- Basic skills related to: leadership; problem-solving, organization, time management, collaboration and communication; self-motivated and self-starter; flexible; and work cooperatively with others as a team player.
- Ability to operate a personal computer in order to complete all functions of daily operations and communication related to the job position; learn current technology devices and applications specific to those with disabilities; physical ability to lift; and be flexible in work hours as required to fulfill duties.
- Coordinate with other professionals and support staff in providing best practices for students, involvement in professional development activities and network with others, and maintain confidentiality of student records.
- Completion of required training including CPR Certification, Suicide Prevention and the MANDT system.
- Represent the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired in a professional manner in dress, attitude, and actions.
PRIMARY FUNCTION :
- Provide direct and consultative Occupational Therapy services to students on campus at NCECBVI who are blind/visually impaired including those with multiple disabilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Based on assessment, develop appropriate therapy plans and establish short and long term goals and objectives.
- Evaluate students' progress and prepare reports that detail the progress or lack of progress for achieving goals.
- Participate in the MDT/IEP staff planning meetings and the individual student meetings.
- Coordinate with teachers and related service providers such as physical therapist, assistive technology specialist, orientation and mobility specialist, speech/language pathologist, school psychologist, school nurse and other appropriate service providers.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Demonstrate and instruct the student, family members, center-based staff and residential staff in the implementation of the program and activities to be carried out between therapy sessions.
- Assist in the selection and/or modification of equipment in the school, dorm and/or home setting to meet the student's educational needs.
- Recommend changes and adapt or modify the environment including assistive technology to meet the student's individual needs.
- Provide OT instruction during meal times to address specific OT-related needs, provide safe eating protocols and assist staff with dining and social skills instruction.
- Provide OT instruction in the residential setting
- Participate in department meetings and ESU4/NCECBVI staff meetings as requested.
- Participate in NCECBVI statewide programs and initiatives related to visual impairments as requested.
- Participate in professional development activities such as attending conferences, workshops and regional/state/national offerings; accessing the professional library and the Nebraska Instructional Resource Center; and reading professional journals in the field of visual impairments and special education.
- Other duties as assigned by the NCECBVI Leadership Team.
SALARY : Negotiable; Based on education and experience
WORK SCHEDULE: Hours will be determined by the applicant. This could be a part-time or a full-time position.
