Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper
The Position: This position acts as a crucial link between leadership and staff and is key to the success of the firm. It involves working closely with principals, staff, and clients and encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including bookkeeping tasks and strong Canadian tax experience. The Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day financial operations, ensuring the accurate recording of financial transactions, and providing tax-related expertise.
Required Attributes: This position is ideal for a well-rounded candidate with experience in small to mid-size firms who possesses excellent oral and written communication skills. The role requires an ambitious, growth-oriented professional with a desire to develop managerial skills while taking ownership of client responsibilities. A strong understanding of Canadian tax law, bookkeeping duties, and the ability to manage both accounting and tax-related tasks is essential.
Experience in Canadian accounting and tax Working knowledge of ASPE
Strong organization and communication skills
Ability to excel in a high-pressure working environment
Experience working in a team-based environment
Desire to grow your career in a small to mid-sized public practice accounting firm
Additional Assets: Prior management experience
Strong problem-solving skills
Experience with CaseWare, QBO, and TaxCycle
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word
Key Responsibilities Include: - Bookkeeping:
- Maintaining and recording daily financial transactions (accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger).
- Managing payroll, reconciling bank and credit card statements, and ensuring timely processing of invoices.
- Preparation of financial statements, maintaining balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Ensuring the accuracy of accounting entries and performing regular reconciliations.
- Canadian Taxation:
- Supporting and completing GST, PST, WCB, personal tax, corporate, partnership, and trust returns.
- Assisting leadership with tax planning, compliance matters, and the filing of tax returns.
- Providing tax advice to clients, ensuring compliance with Canadian tax laws and regulations.
- Managing tax audits, preparing responses to inquiries, and supporting clients through the audit process.
- Leadership and Client Relations:
- Facilitating smooth communication between leadership and staff.
- Managing internal and offshore accounting staff, providing guidance and coaching.
- Delegating work and ensuring files are progressing.
- Communicating directly with clients and identifying additional service opportunities.
- Other Duties:
- Performing various tax and accounting research, maintaining a strong knowledge base.
- Assisting with special engagements and other duties as required.
Required Education and Experience: - Experience working through entire engagements
- Experience working directly with staff and clients
- Knowledge of corporate and personal Canadian tax issues
- Experience with in-depth assurance work
