Job Description

About the Role

Wirecutter is looking for a video producer with a video background to coordinate production and contribute to the onsite experience and audience growth across off-platform channels. As audience development strategist, you will work with teams across Wirecutter — from experts in editorial to fellow strategists in social — supporting daily video production. This includes pitching, scriptwriting, shooting, editing and publishing. In short, bringing Wirecutter’s best-in-class guides and advice to life on video. Wirecutter’s videos are a respite.

They inform and delight our followers (and new audiences) with tips, hacks, and insights that make their lives easier — and give them a behind-the-scenes look into the rigorous testing that separates Wirecutter from the rest. You are passionate about visual storytelling and excited to experiment with new formats in innovative ways. You’ll bring a spirit of collaboration, molding and directing some of our in-house experts into video contributors and, in some cases, camera-ready talent. You will also track video successes and opportunities, pivoting your approach based on data and insights. You will learn our publishing platform and become an expert at working within its formats and guidelines.

This role is based in New York, with the expectation that you’ll produce shoots at Wirecutter’s Long Island City office, at The New York Times’s headquarters, and at a variety of off-site locations.

Responsibilities:

  • Bring Wirecutter to life on video, showcasing our in-depth testing and bringing journalists’ personalities to the fore

  • Research, pitch, shoot, edit, and produce short-form videos

  • Write scripts, captions, headlines, and other copy for video production and publication

  • Ensure video is optimized for current and emerging platforms

  • Monitor video performance and evolve approach based on data and insights

  • Collaborate with the social team to ensure video is integrated holistically into our larger social strategy

  • Coordinate with the editorial and production teams to help make video a core part of the Wirecutter reader’s experience

  • Work with journalists to teach video techniques and best practices, providing guidance in documentation and in person

  • Contribute to new series and franchise development

  • Perform related work as assigned that inspires audience engagement and growth

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our

    value of journalistic independence

and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to Wirecutter's manager of social video

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience producing editorial short-form video for digital media groups

  • 2+ years of experience producing social videos across multiple verticals

  • Demonstrated knowledge of social-first content creation, video production processes and media management

  • Experience pulling and interpreting data, using analytics tools like Dash Social, and Chartbeat to fuel growth

  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite

  • Excellent editorial judgment, with your finger on the pulse of what people are talking about on social

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A proven track record of using video creatively to grow audiences on social

  • An eye for design, typography, and modern aesthetics

  • Familiarity with rights and clearances for obtaining audio and third-party footage/music

  • Comfort publishing video and writing social copy across all platforms

  • Experience working in a newsroom environment

Please include your résumé/CV and a cover letter with your application. You can only upload one file in the “Résumé/CV” box, so combine and upload your résumé and cover letter as one file.

This is a union position as classified by the News Guild of New York.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $76,500.00 and $90,000.00.
