Senior Associate Director of Gift Planning: Estates, Legacy and Compliance

About the Opportunity

Reporting to Director, Gift Planning Administration, Marketing & Stewardship, the Senior Associate Director of Gift Planning, Estates, Legacy and Compliance (SAD) will 1) oversee, coordinate, and track all aspects of the estate administration process for the university, ensuring timely and efficient processing of planned gifts in alignment with institutional policies and donor intent; 2) work closely with executors trustees, attorneys and other estate stakeholders; 3) analyze donor data to identify prospective estate giving donors and create strategies to build and strengthen the pipeline for planned giving; 4) have knowledge of state registration requirements and processes to maintain the university's compliance for its charitable gift annuity program; 5) participate in training for colleagues on estate administration, legacy giving or other gift planning training initiatives to help frontline fundraisers better understand gift planning and provide them with the necessary tools to identify strong gift planning prospects. The SAD will support the Director in creating and executing the Office of Gift Planning's overall strategy to successfully achieve the team's annual goals.

The SAD will contribute to the stewardship of the university's legacy societies and related event programming to regularly cultivate and steward key members to make repeat gifts, increase their giving amount, and preserve or increase their bequest provisions.

Success in this outcome-oriented position will be measured by a number of metrics, including the amount and efficiency of realized bequest from estates, retirement plans, life-income gifts, life insurance policies, etc.; strong analytical abilities that lead to the development of new donor pipelines; effective collaborative and communication skills with donors and colleagues that result in increased planned gift arrangements.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Manage, coordinate, and track all aspects for the planned giving estate administration processes including: Estate Gift Intentions, Life Income Gifts, Realized bequests, inherited retirement plans, life insurance proceeds, NU DAF gifts and revenue from other planned gift arrangements.
  • Work closely with executors, trustees, attorneys, financial institutions, and other stakeholders to efficiently close estates and other planned gift arrangements.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with BNY as well as Advancement members to ensure that contracts are correct and funds are set up, managed, and dispersed appropriately.
  • Oversee state registration requirements and processes to maintain the university's compliance for its charitable gift annuity program.
  • Support the Director in creating and executing the Office of Gift Planning's overall strategy to successfully achieve the team's annual goals.
  • Utilize donor data and analytics from realized estates, beneficiary designations, life insurance proceeds and other planned gift arrangements to develop a predictive model to assist with building individual portfolios to better identify appropriate gift planning prospects for frontline fundraisers throughout the entire university.
  • As an integral member of the gift planning team, utilize all resources available to remain knowledgeable on current and pending legislative tax and technical developments related to planned gifts and estate management. Be familiar with all resources at hand in the Office of Gift Planning and use these resources to support a strong and effective gift planning program.
  • Contribute to the stewardship of the university's legacy societies and related event programing to regularly cultivate and steward key members to make repeat gifts, increase their giving amount, and preserve or increase their bequest provisions.
  • Actively participate in training for colleagues on estate administration, legacy giving or other gift planning training initiatives to help frontline fundraisers better understand gift planning and provide them with the necessary tools to identify strong gift planning prospects.




Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; 5-7 years of progressive experience overseeing gift planning or estate administration processes within a university or legal setting.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, demonstrating clarity and cogency in a fiduciary capacity for donors and Northeastern.
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards of behavior, sound judgment, thoughtfulness, respect for confidential personal information, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated computing proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Salesforce or Ascend, and the ability to use technology to gather, interpret, and organize data.
  • To be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will be adept at managing and closing multiple, and at times complex estate gifts, requiring a strong organizational and communication skills with external advisors and stakeholders.
  • Key attributes include evidence of self-motivation and the ability to work independently, effective negotiation skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • The ability to handle multiple assignments and changing priorities as circumstances may dictate is essential for success.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the values and mission of higher education.
