Job Description

Open Rank, Continuing Track Faculty Position

Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences

The University of Delaware, College of Health Sciences (CHS) is excited to invite applications for a full-time, open-rank CT faculty position in the Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences (MMSC), with specialization in the area of Biotechnology. The new faculty will be joining the Department and CHS as we continue to expand and build upon our success as a dynamic department offering academic programs in the clinical, biomedical, and pre-health sciences at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Continuing Track (CT) is UD’s full-time, continuing faculty line, similar to the tenure track. CT faculty enjoy contracts that increase in length over time and, like tenure-track faculty, receive full and generous benefits, including family-friendly benefits, as part of their compensation package. CT faculty with terminal degrees hold professorial rank and have a path to promotion up to full professor; CT faculty without terminal degrees are at the instructor rank and have a parallel path to promotion. All CT faculty earn sabbaticals, have opportunities to pursue research, participate in shared governance, and hold academic leadership positions.

Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate students in lecture and laboratory courses in the ASBMB-accredited Applied Molecular Biology and Biotechnology curriculum. The candidate will be expected to advise graduate students, pursue scholarly activities, and perform service to the university, department, and professional community. Content knowledge in the biomedical sciences and a demonstrated commitment to using evidence-based teaching methods are required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Minimum of three years’ experience in applied molecular biology/biotechnology or molecular diagnostics (industry or academia). Expertise in one or more of the following: cell culture, recombinant DNA, protein purification, molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, and immunology techniques. Required: Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Sc.D., Ed.D., M.D. or equivalent) by the time of appointment; content knowledge in biomedical sciences; record of effective, evidence-based teaching. This position provides a robust and supportive environment for teaching and other scholarly pursuits within an active research department. The successful candidate is expected to excel at teaching, engage in scholarship and professional development, and teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.  Faculty in the Department of Medical and Molecular Sciences are expected to engage in service to the University, the College of Health Sciences, and the Department, as well as outreach to the community, demonstrating a commitment to providing a supportive environment and cultivating belonging.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

MMSC is an agile, student-centered department recognized for innovation in education, research, outreach, and practice. We have expanded undergraduate offerings to include Medical Laboratory Science (NAACLS-accredited), Applied Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (ASBMB-accredited), and two Medical Diagnostics majors (one uniquely preparing students for Physician Assistant programs). Graduate education has grown with three professionally focused master’s degrees alongside our established Ph.D. in Molecular BioSciences.  We actively collaborate with academic, clinical, community, and industry partners to enrich experiential learning and broaden access to STEM. Approximately 50% of MMSC faculty lead sponsored projects, reflecting our commitment to advancing science and educational innovation.

The College of Health Sciences is a dynamic, innovative academic unit with more than 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students and 131 faculty, who are nationally recognized leaders across multiple disciplines. The College is housed in multiple buildings on the traditional main campus, but also is an anchor tenant of the University’s Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus. STAR has become an exciting center that combines business, research and education, focused on leading topics in health science, biopharmaceuticals, data science, engineering, finance and other cross-cutting fields of study. In addition to Kinesiology and Applied Physiology (ranked #6 according to the National Academy of Kinesiology), the College has six additional academic units, including Communication Sciences and Disorders, Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Nutrition Sciences, Medical and Molecular Sciences, Physical Therapy (ranked #1 by US News and World Report), and the School of Nursing. With annual research expenditures of approximately $20 million, the college currently houses a number of large, interdisciplinary grants with significant funding from the NIH and DoD. The college boasts strong research teams in the areas of neurological disorders, cardiovascular health, and other chronic disease conditions, as well as rehabilitation science and concussion.

One of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States, the University of Delaware has a rich history of contributing scientific insights and new ideas, fostering enlightenment, transforming lives and changing the world. Today under the leadership of Interim President Laura Carlson, the University is committed to building on this legacy to meet the complex challenges facing the globe. The University’s foremost priority remains to ensure the success of every student, and this commitment dates back to our roots as a small private academy founded in 1743. From that early school, which educated three signers of the Declaration of Independence, UD has grown into a research-intensive, technologically advanced institution that is at the forefront of innovation in the classroom, in the laboratory and in the community.

Located in scenic Newark, Delaware, within 2 hours of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., the University is a Land Grant, Sea Grant, Space Grant, and Carnegie Research University (with very high research activity, a designation accorded to fewer than 3% of degree-granting institutions in the U.S.), and with external funding exceeding $200 million. A state-assisted, privately governed institution, the University enrolls approximately 18,600 undergraduates and 4,500 graduate students.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Compensation packages are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Faculty at the University have regularly received annual cost-of-living and merit salary increases, and the benefits package is one of the best in the nation. Relocation and start-up funds are available and negotiable. Appointment date is August 15th 2026.

TO APPLY: Review of applications will begin on a rolling basis and continue until the position is filled. Nominations and expressions of interest will be kept confidential; references will be contacted only with the candidate’s permission.
Please submit the following:

  1. Letter of application
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. Statement of teaching philosophy and experience
  4. Statement of scholarly interests
  5. Contact information for three references

The letter of application and CV will be shared with the search committee. For more information, contact Nicole Pekarek, Ph.D., MLS(ASCP), SBB(ASCP)CM, Search Committee Chair, at [email protected].  Review of applications will begin on October 15, and will continue until the position is filled.
