Job Description
The Birmingham Promise High School Success Coach is responsible for guiding high school students through the options available to them as they transition from high school to college and career. Through regular interactions with students, strong relationships with school-based staff, and with a belief in the potential of every student, high school success coaches play a crucial role in ensuring that every child in Birmingham City Schools can access opportunities that lead to economic mobility, security, and prosperity. Major Duties And Responsibilities - Implement a student enrollment strategy consisting of events, school visits, relationships, and timelines to ensure that as many students as possible take advantage of the resources provided by Birmingham Promise
- Provide effective guidance for students regarding college and career planning to facilitate their entry into the Birmingham Promise scholarship program or the internship programs (for 11th grade students)
- Design workshops and other events that help students explore their college and career interests and options, and implement programming working in close partnership with the Promise WBL team, community organizations and school counselors, career academies, etc.
- Work with counselors and Promise Champions, along with other school-based staff, to support as many students as possible to develop a substantive plan for post-secondary success, focusing on their enrollment in Promise support options
- Support students to understand college financial aid options and complete the FAFSA, working with community partners like CAMP to drive FAFSA completion
- Coordinate and lead small-group meetings and presentations regarding the college, financial aid, and scholarship processes across the K-12 system
- Through workshops and individual assistance, guide students and parents to systematically complete and submit all components of the Birmingham Promise application
- Build and implement a strategy to inform parents about the opportunities and requirements of the Birmingham Promise program
- Build and maintain relationships with college admissions personnel to visit high school campus and follow up with students' college and financial aid applications
- Coordinate and lead Promise events that build awareness of Promise opportunities in schools, at Innovation Depot, and in the community
Required Education, Experience And Skills - Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university
- A positive "Whatever it takes" attitude is essential
- Passion and commitment to working with students to improve their educational opportunities
- Ability to inspire, motivate, and advocate for ALL students
- Maintain high expectations for self and students
- Willingness to go above and beyond in order help students achieve
- Ability to work well with diverse groups of people
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be deadline driven, able to prioritize, and execute goals and plans of the organization
- Must be committed to using and maintaining data to best support students
- Must be self-motivated but able to work within a group to achieve common goals
- Detail-oriented
- Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive criticism well
- Ability to remain flexible, open-minded, patient and positive
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work to maximize results
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher
- Willing to work some Saturdays and evenings as required
- Must be able to pass a Criminal Background Check
