POSITION DETAILS

GENERAL DUTIES

The Dean, reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, oversees a school, academic program and/or function to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness. He/she/they develop long- and short-range plans, and exercise management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities. He/she/they foster a high-quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and create and strengthen partnerships within and outside the College as a strong advocate.

In support of the campus mission, strategic plans and values, the Provost's office seeks to fill the Dean of Arts and Humanities position. The School of Arts and Humanities consists of the following departments: Aaron Copland School of Music; Art; Classical, Middle Eastern, and Asian Languages and Cultures; Comparative Literature; Drama, Theatre & Dance; English; European Languages and Literatures; Hispanic Languages and Literatures; Library; Linguistics and Communication Disorders; Media Studies.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

-Provide leadership to the School of Arts and Humanities and its programs, including assessment of fiscal needs.

-Attract, support, and promote an inclusive and diverse faculty and student community.

-Foster cross-disciplinary collaboration.

-Oversee the development and implementation of undergraduate and graduate curriculum with the faculty.

-Advance a robust research program.

-Continually revise and improve the School???s infrastructure, technologies, and facilities to support the evolving needs of the School.

-Operate in a faculty governance environment that values transparency to build consensus in support of the educational missions of the School and the College. -Lead development activities, such as fund-raising and grant-writing, to promote and advance programs, teaching, and scholarship.

-Articulate the School???s needs, goals, and accomplishments to external constituencies, such as alumni, academic and cultural institutions, social organizations, government agencies, and business and industry groups.

-Meet twice per month with the co-directors of the School of the Arts, once per year with the full faculty and student representatives to help them direct and develop initiatives in admissions, fundraising and curriculum.

-Supervise a half-time Associate to the Dean of the School of the Arts, its co-directors, and the staff of the School of Arts and Humanities.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

We seek a scholar and teacher who holds a Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree in a relevant discipline, with an outstanding record of teaching, scholarship, and service that will warrant appointment as a tenured associate professor or professor in the School of Arts and Humanities. Significant leadership experience as an academic administrator at the level of department chair or a more senior academic administrator is preferred.

In addition, the successful candidate will have the intellectual leadership, ability, and demonstrated experience to effectively and collaboratively provide leadership to the School of Arts and Humanities and its programs through nurturing and advancing the affinities between the humanities and the arts; and, demonstrated experience with planning and budgeting, fund-raising and grant-writing, as well as experience operating with faculty governance and in an unionized environment.
