Rutherford Wine Co. is seeking a Controller. The Controller will maintain responsibility for the strategic direction and oversight of Accounting Department. The Controller will bring important perspective, leadership and management skills to best position the Accounting team to serve the company.
Principal Relationships:
Supervises or manages: A/P, Accounting Specialist, and A/R and Accounting Assistant
Interacts with: Winery managers and staff and company vendors
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Understand, communicate, and share company vision throughout division/organization and provide cross-functional perspective, direction, and support.
• Ensure internal controls of account department are maintained, review with GM if checks and balances are compromised with short term solution.
• Develop group and individual performance plans in alignment with company goals and objectives; communicate clearly defined individual and group objectives; maintain level of productivity. Ensure department efficiency and accuracy of reported information.
• Monitor performance and provide feedback to direct reports through formal quarterly and annual reviews; regularly communicate with staff to achieve mutual understanding and desired results
• Conduct team meetings with department employees; includes monthly safety and 7 Habits topics
• Handle employee issues, concerns, and complaints in an objective and confidential manner
• Responsible for initiating and maintaining company budget timeline.
• Provide monthly budgets vs. actuals for all departments.
• Manage accrual budgeting with Sales Managers and communicating for year-end close.
• Hire, supervise and develop Accounting staff to support organizational needs
• Manage monthly financial reporting and close process which includes communication and follow up with all pertinent departments on current Balance Sheet/Income Statement by department, Cash Flows. Will include updates on company benchmarks whether accomplished or not by percentage for trend analysis.
• Ensure all payroll, income, sales, property and other taxes and/or permits are up to date ensuring deadlines are met and appropriate processes are in place to ensure compliance
• Stay abreast of current accounting and finance issues and ensure that corporate financial statements are presented in accordance with GAAP
• Lead corporate inventory costing process for farming, retail, and cased goods products
• Coordinate with all external company accounting personnel involved with RWC. As as accounting liaison to finance groups under corporate umbrella.
• Support activities of financial analytical services, such as:
o Methods of improving the efficiency and profitability of existing operations
o Cost studies to identify problems and opportunities
o Potential costs and profitability of new brands, wines, packages, methods, markets and pricing
o Analysis and reporting of variances from planned costs and results
• Build strong relationships with other functional leaders to recommend and implement solutions to company issues
• Improve visibility into business performance through the development of product, geographic, and line of business P&Ls and other reports that allow regular inspection and measurement of execution of key strategic initiatives
• Provide leadership understanding of financial implications of alternative strategic scenarios
• Primary internal and external contact for NAV and Concur. Management of Concur reimbursement system
• Maintain winery liability insurance policies.
• Develop and maintain capital request and protocols.
• Clear understanding of family owned entities and banking relationships.
• Assist with Tax Auditors.
Job Requirements:
Education/Experience:
• Education: B.S. in Accounting, M.B.A. and/or CPA preferred.
• Related Experience required: Minimum of 5 years financial and supervisory experience in related position. Process manufacturing experience is a distinct asset and wine industry experience a strong plus.
• Specific Skills required: Excellent written and verbal communication and analytical skills; strong project management skills; solid command of financial skills including general accounting, financial reporting & analysis, and tax management.
